Questions parents often ask
Answers to the questions families most often want to ask before starting therapy
It's completely normal to have questions before starting speech and language therapy. Every child is different, and every family's situation is unique. Here are some things parents often ask. If you're wondering about something not covered here, you're always welcome to get in touch.
Getting started
What happens in an initial assessment?
An assessment is simply a chance for me to get to know your child, how they communicate, what feels easy, and what feels tricky. We’ll talk about your child’s history, your goals, and what matters most to you as a family. I’ll use play, conversation, or structured activities to build a full picture. You’ll always receive clear feedback and recommendations afterwards.
Do I need a referral from a doctor or school?
No, you can contact me directly. There’s no referral needed from a GP, health visitor, or teacher.
How do we book or get started?
Just send a message, email, or use the contact form. We’ll start with a short free phone call so you can ask questions and decide whether an assessment is the right next step.
How therapy works
How do you set therapy goals?
We set goals together. I’ll ask what matters most at home, at school, and in everyday life. Your child is included in goal-setting in a way that feels comfortable for them. This helps build motivation and ownership.
How often will we meet?
Most sessions last 45–60 minutes. Some children benefit from weekly sessions; others do well with a more flexible plan. We’ll decide this together based on your child’s needs, attention, and what works for your family.
What if my child doesn't want to join in?
That’s very common, especially at first. There’s no pressure to “perform”. I use play, humour, choice, and shared activities to help children feel safe and curious. Progress always begins with relationship and trust.
How will know if therapy is helping?
You’ll always know what we’re working on and why. We review progress regularly through short parent updates, goal reviews, and recognised outcome measures. You’ll see changes not just in activities, but in confidence, independence, and participation.
Practical details
Do you work in schools?
Yes. Many sessions take place in school so strategies can be used throughout the week. I can also offer teacher coaching, classroom observations, and joint planning with SENDCos.
Do you offer home or online sessions?
Yes. You can choose sessions at home, in school, or online, whatever feels easiest. Online sessions can work especially well for older children.
Do you provide written reports?
Yes. A short summary is included after assessment. Full reports or written updates during therapy can be provided if agreed in advance.
Fees and admin
How much does therapy cost?
See the full Fees and Terms page
Fees vary depending on the type and length of session, and whether any additional written work or school liaison is needed. You’ll always receive a clear breakdown of costs before anything begins, no hidden charges.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel, please give at least 24 hours’ notice. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice, or missed without notice, may be charged in full, except in cases of illness or emergency. If I need to cancel, you won’t be charged for that session.
Can we use EHCP funding or insurance?
Yes. Some families use EHCP personal budgets or private health insurance to fund therapy. For EHCP funding: I can accept direct payment from the local authority, as long as this has been agreed in advance with the family and the LA. For private health insurance: you pay for sessions first, then claim reimbursement from your insurer. I can provide any invoices or paperwork you need — just let me know if you’re exploring funding options.
Reviewing and ending therapy
How often do we review progress?
Progress is reviewed regularly within sessions, and more formally every 6–12 weeks depending on your child’s goals and level of support. Reviews are shared with families and schools so everyone stays informed.
What happens if my child no longer needs therapy?
Therapy can be reduced or ended when goals are met, or when you feel confident to continue strategies at home or school. Discharge is always a joint decision, there is no pressure to continue longer than needed.
Can we pause therapy and return later?
Yes. Many families take a break between blocks of therapy. You can return at any time, and previous records are stored securely so we can pick up where we left off.
What if we want to stop therapy early?
You can end therapy at any time. If you need to cancel a session, please give at least 24 hours’ notice. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice, or missed without notice, may be charged in full, except in cases of illness or emergency.
